This is the main controller unit of the Cairn Flash Photolysis system. It houses both the power and the control circuitry. We designed the main power charger circuit in house to achieve maximum power throughput and supprised even ourselves with the results. The box switches power from a standard switch mode power supply unit into an high energy desity capacitor bank, until they reach the required voltage. The unit is capable of charging 4,000mF to 400 Volts in about three seconds.
The control circuitry allows the user to select capacitances of between 20 and 4,000mF and Voltages of up to 400 Volts. The flash onset can be triggered extenally using the external BNC control input, allowing easy integration of the system into any setup. Additionally there is a TTL level output which is high during the flash. This can be used to gate sensitive detector electronics, such as our photomultiplier tube, to prevent them being saturated by the high light levels during the flash. There is also a test mode to assist with lamp focussing.
