Monochromator Multiple Excitation Systems

Our recommended monochromator multiple excitation configuration.

Our standard monochromator multiple excitation system, together with its purpose designed light source has recently undergone a major upgrade, with an improvement in the light collecting efficiency from f2.5 to f2. The system consists of a high intensity xenon arc light source coupled to our rapid Optoscan monochromator, and then to a fluorescence microscope via a liquid light guide. The main advantages of this arangement are as follows:

  1. Our xenon light source with integral igniter offers intense uniform illumination without the risk to neighbouring electronic equipment often assoaciated with this type of lamp.
  2. Fully closable iris diaphragm on monochromator input to allow attenuation of input light levels.
  3. The optical adapter includes neutral density material as standard and the monochromator offers optical shuttering in about one milli-second.
  4. The filter monochromator can change center wavelength and bandwidth allowing a trade between optical through put and speed, making it suitable for photometric and imaging applications. With up to eight pre programmed "virtual filter positions" available it is possible to use combinations of different dyes simultaneously.
  5. The flexible liquid light guide serves to isolate the monochromator from the microscope, thus ensuring that no vibration is transferred.
  6. For most makes of research microscope our light guide couplings can take the place of the manufacturer's own epifluorescence attachment; with a resulting benefit in optical efficiency, and a financial saving.
